DUBLIN — In a case where two East Bay men fired guns at each other, but killed a 19-year-old woman, jurors returned the exact same verdict against both men Wednesday morning.Willie Samuels, 28, and Fernando Sevilla, 42, both escaped murder convictions, but jurors found them guilty of voluntary manslaughter and gun enhancements in the death of Brentwood resident Madalyn Sandoval. The trial stemmed from a shooting at 3:30 a.m. on Nov. 6, 2020, near San Antonio Park in Oakland. The jury deliberated for several days, and the verdict came two days after one juror privately voiced concerns about how deliberations were going to the judge. As speculation rose about the potential for a mistrial, jurors announced Wednesday they had agreed on a manslaughter verdict. The verdict presents another crossroads for the Alameda County District Attorney’s office. During the trial, new DA Pamela Price issued a directive telling her prosecutors to generally avoid filing enhancements — pa...Plans to build a massive, floating pool on the San Francisco Bay get legislative boost

The Bay Area is one step closer to getting its first public floating pool, though challenges remain for the waterfront development just south of the Bay Bridge.Sen. Scott Wiener, a Democrat from San Francisco, proposed legislation Wednesday authorizing construction of a heated, Olympic-sized pool that would float on the San Francisco Bay, surrounded by retail space, offices and housing.Because the site of the proposed project — Piers 30-32 — is owned by the state, a developer can’t build there without special legislative approval. But even if Wiener’s Senate Bill 273 bill passes, the project still must get a green light from the city, the state and several other agencies.Wiener described the proposed project as a “powerful vision for the waterfront.”“I’m proud to introduce this new legislation and partner with the Port of San Francisco to make our waterfront stronger, safer, more sustainable, and more vibrant,” he said in a news releas...Warriors’ Andre Iguodala to have wrist surgery next week

He was seen icing his hand in the locker room and had been ruled out ahead of Wednesday’s game against the Los Angeles Clippers. While the Warriors couldn’t provide a timeline for Iguodala’s return, his surgery will likely sideline him for the remainder of the regular season and could keep him out into the postseason. The Warriors have no time to sulk the unfortunate news and will need to move on without him. By that, I mean that thousands of people, uncountable numbers of wildlife, hundreds of businesses and the real estate value of thousands of mortgages would all suffer if Lake Merritt goes under, and succumbs to rotten algae, dead fish and odors associated with foul water. This could happen. A warming global climate and developing El Niño could bring late summer temperatures to levels conducive to harmful algal blooms, leading to zero oxygen again and more dead fish. Nutrient levels are already there, and tidal flows remain lower than historic. Add urban runoff, and the fact that most storm drains and inlets are unfiltered, and you can have quite a mess. The Lake’s water quality account is overdrawn.
