A Torrance police officer placed on administrative leave was ordered Monday to stand trial for shooting a knife-wielding suspect in 2018 after a judge ruled sufficient evidence existed that the officer used more force than necessary.Superior Court Judge Kevin Stennis said sending the case to trial was a “difficult decision for the court and will be a difficult decision for the jury,” but said prosecutors had presented enough evidence during a preliminary hearing to have the case against David Frederick Chandler Jr. heard by a jury.Chandler, 35, faces one count of assault by an officer stemming from an Aug. 27, 2018 officer-involved shooting that left Jarvis Goode with a bullet wound to the shoulder.Prosecutors played body-worn camera from Chandler and a second officer and played a portion of an interview with Chandler conducted during an internal investigation of the shooting.Margo Goode, Jarvis’ grandmother, testified Monday that Jarvis suffered from mental health problems. By Elaine S. Povich, Stateline.orgThousands of college students will get hundreds of dollars in compensation as colleges and universities move this summer to settle multimillion-dollar lawsuits stemming from canceled classes and activities during COVID-19 pandemic shutdowns. While some of the class-action suits against the colleges and universities are still in litigation, and still others dismissed, several major cases have been settled in recent weeks. The settlements mean students who were charged tuition and fees but weren’t able to use in-person services during the pandemic shutdowns will receive some compensation, though they won’t be refunded for all the on-campus amenities they lost. The amounts depend on the total settlement figure, minus legal fees and other court expenses. Each case has a different timeline. Most recently, the University of Delaware agreed in June to set up a $6.3 million fund to partially reimburse tuition and fees that the students paid for classes, housing...Pac-12 finances: Estimating the NCAA Tournament cash available for the remaining schools
