MINNEAPOLIS (AP) — Football Bowl Subdivision newcomers James Madison and Jacksonville State along with five-win Minnesota are bound for bowls because of a shortage of eligible teams. Those three teams round out the 82 available spots because only 79 teams achieved the six wins necessary for bowl eligibility.James Madison (11-1) and Jacksonville State (8-4) are still transitioning to full FBS status and would not be eligible if there were enough six-win teams.James Madison, after having two appeals of bowl eligibility rules rejected by the NCAA, had threatened legal action to be allowed to play in a bowl. The school backed off last week with the hope a bid would come if not enough teams reached the six-win threshold. The inclusion of James Madison and Jacksonville State still left one opening for Minnesota, which had a 992 Academic Progress Rate score in 2021-22 for the best of the five-win teams. Mississippi State (985) would have been the next 5-7 team in line. The Gophers finished th...UTEP fires Dana Dimel after 5th losing season in 6 years

EL PASO, Texas (AP) — UTEP fired football coach Dana Dimel on Sunday, a day after the end of his fifth losing season in six years. The Miners finished 3-9 after a 42-28 loss to undefeated Liberty before a sparse crowd at the Sun Bowl. It was the fourth time UTEP failed to win more than three games under Dimel, who had a year left on his contract.Dimel ended a 16-year absence from head coaching when he took over the Miners in 2018. He had three winning seasons in Wyoming from 1997-99 before three losing years with Houston. The 61-year-old’s combined record at his two Texas stops was 28-75. Dimel inherited a winless team, then went 1-11 in consecutive years before a 3-5 record in the pandemic-shortened 2020 season. After going 7-6 with a New Mexico Bowl loss to Fresno State in 2021, the Miners were 5-7 a year ago.“When he was hired, UTEP football was coming off a winless season, and he built a more competitive team,” said athletic director Jim Senter, who took the job in 2017 and h...Min Woo Lee wins Australian PGA. EAST RUTHERFORD, N.J. — The Patriots took two weeks to decide on a starting quarterback for their Week 12 matchup against the Giants. There was no correct choice to be made.Head coach Bill Belichick ultimately decided to start the same quarterback the Patriots had trotted out all season in Mac Jones, who had barely outperformed Bailey Zappe while the two signal-callers split first-team reps 50-50 over the week of practice following a Week 11 bye, in Sunday’s 10-7 loss to the Giants.Related ArticlesNew England Patriots | Patriots starter suprisingly active in Week 12 matchup with Giants New England Patriots | Source: Patriots planning to start QB Mac Jones against Giants New England Patriots | Patriots release backup QB before Giants game New England Patriots | Four Patriots players to watch Week 12 vs. Giants include underrated defender New England Patriots | NFL notes: Why Patriots players see 3 ...‘Hunger Games’ feasts, ‘Napoleon’ comes up short

NEW YORK — The Walt Disney Co.’s “Wish” had been expected to rule the Thanksgiving weekend box office, but moviegoers instead feasted on leftovers, as “The Hunger Games: The Ballad of Songbirds and Snakes” led ticket sales for the second weekend, according to studio estimates Sunday.Neither of the weekend’s top new releases — “Wish” and Ridley Scott’s “Napoleon” — could keep up with Lionsgate’s “Hunger Games” prequel. After debuting the previous weekend with $44.6 million, the return to Panem proved the top draw for holiday moviegoers, grossing $28.8 million over the weekend and $42 million over the five-day holiday frame. In two weeks of release, “Songbirds and Snakes” has grossed nearly $100 million domestically and $200 million globally. The closer contest was for second place, where “Napoleon” narrowly outmaneuvered “Wish.”Scott’s epic outperformed expectat...Patriots rookie receiver Demario Douglas ruled out with head injury

We are now past Thanksgiving, the traditional NHL demarcation line that supposedly separates the haves and have-nots. If you are in the playoffs by this time of year, history tells us that the odds are in your favor that you’ll be in the playoffs come April. That would suggest that the Bruins, still leading the Atlantic Division by six points, are safely ensconced in the post-season for a shot at redemption from last season’s failure. But one rather larger question remains about this team.Who and what are these 2023-24 Bruins exactly? One thing they are not is a team that can outscore its defensive lapses. In their 14 wins, they’ve kept their opponent to two goals or fewer. In their six losses (three regulation, three overtime) they’ve allowed more than two. The last week was particularly ugly. In going 1-2-1, they gave up 17 goals in the three losses. We should have seen coming the lost weekend in which they allowed a dozen goals in two games. Honda is recalling select 2023-2024 Accord and HR-V vehicles due to a missing piece in the front seat belt pretensioners, which could increase injury risks during a crash.According to notices published by Honda and the National Highway Safety Traffic Administration earlier this week, the pretensioners — which tighten seat belts in place upon impact — may be missing the rivet that secures the quick connector and wire plate.Regulators say this means that passengers may not be properly restrained in a crash. The NHTSA credited the issue to an error made during assembly. More than 300,000 Accords and HR-Vs are potentially affected. For consumers impacted by this recall, dealers will inspect all cars and potentially replace the seat belt pretensioner assembly at no cost. Those who have already paid for these repairs at their own expense may also be eligible for reimbursement.EV sales on pace to set recordElectric vehicle sales are expected to hit a record 9% of all passenger vehicles in t...B.C. First Nation votes to take over child and family services for its residents

DUNCAN, B.C. — British Columbia’s largest First Nation has voted to take over authority of child and family services for its residents. Results of a vote held by the Cowichan Tribes show 83 per cent of the 416 citizens who cast ballots were in favour of the new law that would prioritize supports to keep children with their families or place them with relatives or in other Indigenous homes.Negotiator Robert Morales, who helped develop the new law, says the vote represents a significant step in the self-determination of the Cowichan people and the ability to decide what’s in the best interests of their children. The Cowichan Tribes, which has about 5,300 members and is based on Vancouver Island, have been negotiating for years with the federal and provincial governments on what the transition will look like.Morales says those negotiations are expected to wrap up by January and the Cowichan Tribes are hoping to take over by April 2024.He says there are about 100 children who ...Latest news
