Stock market today: Asian stocks follow Wall St up after strong US jobs report BEIJING (AP) — Asian stocks followed Wall Street higher on Monday after strong U.S. hiring data coupled with scant wage gains suggested a possible recession might be further away, but also that inflationary pressures are weakening.Tokyo’s benchmark gained almost 2%. Shanghai, Hong Kong and Seoul also rose. Wall Street’s benchmark S&P 500 index leaped 1.5% on Friday, putting it on the verge of entering what traders call a “bull market” after rising nearly 20% in seven months.Government data on Friday showed employers hired more people than expected in May but wage gains are slowing. That suggests the economy is strong but upward pressure on inflation might be weakening, reducing the need for the Federal Reserve to cool business activity with more rate hikes.“Markets appear poised to ride last week’s upward momentum as bubbly risk appetite finds a comfort pillow in hopes for a U.S. soft landing,” Stephen Innes of SPI Asset Management said in a report. The Nikkei 225 in ...

Braves’ Marcell Ozuna benched after not hustling on 415-foot single PHOENIX (AP) — Marcell Ozuna stayed at home plate way too long admiring his 415-foot single. The Atlanta Braves slugger spent most of the rest of the game watching from the bench.Ozuna was removed from the Braves’ 8-5 victory over the Arizona Diamondbacks in the sixth inning Sunday after he failed to hustle on his long hit in the fourth inning in his second at-bat.Ozuna’s towering shot off Zac Gallen looked as though it was either going over the wall or into the glove of Arizona center fielder Jake McCarthy. The ball instead hit an overhang just below the line for a home run. Ozuna was not running hard while watching the ball and had to stop at first.Braves manager Brian Snitker replaced him as Atlanta’s designated hitter with Sean Murphy.“I guarantee he feels worse than I do for having to take him out,” Snitker said.Ozuna, a two-time All-Star, is hitting .227 with 11 home runs and 23 RBIs in 44 games this season. —AP MLB: https://apnews.com/hub/MLB and https://twitt...

Sharing the sentence: Separation takes toll on incarcerated moms and their kids LINCOLN, Ill. (AP) — Dressed in her Sunday best — pink ruffled sleeves and a rainbow tulle tutu — Crystal Martinez’s 4-year-old daughter proudly presented her with a multicolored bouquet of carefully crafted tissue paper flowers. With her 5-year-old son nestled on her lap, laughing in delight, Martinez held out her arms and pulled the girl into a hug so tight that her glasses were knocked askew.“I want you! I don’t want the flowers,” Martinez said, smiling and holding her children close.Martinez’ five children, including the three aged 13, 10 and 6, last month traveled for three hours from Chicago to visit her in Logan Correctional, Illinois’ largest state prison for women and transgender people, on the Reunification Ride. The donation-dependent initiative buses prisoners’ family members 180 miles (290 km) from the city to Logan every month so they can spend time with their mothers and grandmothers. The number of incarcerated women in the United States dropped by tens of thousa...

Nuggets’ Michael Malone questions team’s effort after Game 2 showing: “This is not the preseason” In the disappointing aftermath of Sunday night’s Game 2, Nuggets coach Michael Malone asked his team if they knew why they’d suffered their first home loss of the postseason.According to Malone, the answer wasn’t elusive. They knew what he was getting at.“Let’s talk about effort,” Malone said after Miami seized Game 2 with a 111-108 win, snatching homecourt advantage in the process. “This is the NBA Finals, we are talking about effort; that’s a huge concern of mine.”Malone tried to warn inquiring media tempted to deem the series over after Game 1 when he insisted the Nuggets didn’t play well. But Sunday reaffirmed the defensive lapses he’d seen when he professed concern. He knew Miami, which had been a great 3-point shooting team throughout the playoffs, wasn’t going to remain cold for long. That effort he cited trickled into numerous alarming aspects of the night.“We had guys out there that were just whether feeling sorry for themselves for not making shots or thin...
