The journey from Maui to Portland, Oregon, and then to the Bay Area might seem like an arduous one for a dog. But the long trip didn’t kill Wolfie’s “spitfire” personality. He couldn’t wait to get out of his kennel at the Marin Humane Society and do his business.The one-year-old terrier was one of 44 animals that arrived in Hayward around 8:45 p.m. last Friday, standing at the front of their crates with wagging tails and wiggling whiskers. Bay Area spa shuttered after 2 die from Legionnaires' disease

(KRON) -- Contra Costa County health officials said water samples collected from a Richmond day spa's hot tub contained high levels of legionella bacteria, making it the likely source of two Legionnaires’ disease deaths. Contra Costa Health began investigating Zen Day Spa on August 4, less than 24 hours after two patients died in hospitals. Both patients had visited the spa before becoming ill with Legionnaires’ disease.County health officials discovered that the spa, located at 12230 San Pablo Avenue, was operating without a health permit and had an illegal hot tub. The hot tub at Zen Day Spa was designed for private -- not commercial -- use."CCH collected water and swab samples and, while still awaiting final reports from the lab, initial results show high concentrations of legionella bacteria," health officials announced Monday. Fire near Port of Oakland being investigated by Alameda County DA

(KRON) -- A fire that broke out earlier this month near the Port of Oakland is being investigated, according to the Alameda County District Attorney's Office. The fire, which occurred at Schnitzer Steel's Oakland facility on August 9 and 10, sent smoke billowing into the sky and led to air quality advisories in the East Bay.The fire erupted in a large pile of scrap metal just after 5:30 p.m. on the evening of Aug. 9. Fire crews were able to contain it to just one pile of debris and it was under control by 9 p.m., officials said. Rain falls in Bay Area as remnants of Hilary hit It was officially put out on Thursday Aug. 10.The cause of the fire has not been determined. Redwood City PD warn of jewelry thief who kissed victim before stealing necklace

(KRON) -- The Redwood City Police Department is warning the public to be vigilant in the wake of two incidents where thieves stole jewelry from unsuspecting victims in the parking lot of a Costco at 2300 Middlefield Road. The first instance occurred on Friday, Aug. 11.According to police, the victim was approached by an unidentified woman who gave her a fake gold necklace. When the victim arrived home, she realized the suspect had stolen her gold necklace. (AP) — Arkansas’ top education official on Monday told school districts offering an Advanced Placement African American Studies course to send in their course materials for review, citing concerns the class may not comply with a state law restricting how race is taught in the classroom.Education Secretary Jacob Oliva sent the letter to the five districts that have said they will continue teaching the class after the state said it was not an approved course and would not count toward a student’s graduation credit.
