The 44-day war in 2020 between Azerbaijan and Armenia ended the long-lasting occupation of the Karabakh region of Azerbaijan and opened new opportunities for the reintegration of Armenians living in Karabakh into Azerbaijan and durable peace in the region - writes Shahmar Hajiyev and Talya İşcan.Unfortunately, during consultations and peace talks between the Armenian and Azerbaijani governments, with the participation of mediators and in which post-conflict negotiations were based on mutual recognition of territorial integrity and sovereignty, a controversial event happened when, on August 16, the United Nations Security Council met at the initiative of Armenia. It is worth noting that Armenia’s efforts at the UN Security Council to highlight alleged human rights violations and humanitarian issues caused by Azerbaijan’s checkpoint on the Lachin road were ultimately unsuccessful. Nevertheless, the recent UN Security Council session revealed an alarming weakness in terms of peace and s...Massive explosion in Romania leaves two dead and 56 injured

By Eric Tucker, Lindsay Whitehurst and Michael Kunzelman | Associated PressWASHINGTON — A judge on Monday set a March 4, 2024, trial date for Donald Trump in the federal case in Washington charging the former president with trying to overturn the results of the 2020 election, rejecting a defense request to push back the case by years.U.S. District Judge Tanya Chutkan rebuffed claims by Trump’s attorneys that an April 2026 trial date was necessary to account for the huge volume of evidence they say they are reviewing and to prepare for what they contend is a novel and unprecedented prosecution. But she agreed to postpone the trial slightly beyond the January 2024 date proposed by special counsel Jack Smith’s prosecution team.“The public has a right to a prompt and efficient resolution of this matter,” Chutkan said.If the current date holds, it would represent a setback to Trump’s efforts to push the case back until well after the 2024 presidential election, a contes...ASU’s self-imposed postseason ban: The latest chapter in an epic administrative failure

The NCAA’s committee on infractions will provide the epilogue in its own sweet time. But Arizona State has published the final chapter of the Herm Edwards Era. It’s a tale of horror and hubris, destruction and mayhem co-authored by president Michael Crow and athletic director Ray Anderson. On Sunday, five days before the 2023 season opener, the Sun Devils announced a self-imposed postseason ban — a move that blindsided coach Kenny Dillingham and the players and left a barrage of questions that the authors of the decision, Crow and Anderson, have no intention of answering. They will hide behind what the school called “our membership obligation (to the NCAA) to maintain the confidentiality of the matter.” As a result, Crow and Anderson “will not be commenting further at this time.”Their obligations to the ASU players are a secondary concern. Our thoughts on the deplorable decision …— With the full sweep of the Edwards era now available for judgment, we’re left with a rh...9 awesome Bay Area falafel spots to try

If you want to start a fight — or at least a very impassioned discussion — just bring up falafel’s origin story. Some people believe the first delicious chickpea fritters hit the hot oil in Egypt 1,000 years ago. Others credit sixth-century India. And cultures across the Middle East claim falafel as their own. Who can blame them? There are few things more satisfying than a still-warm pita stuffed with crispy, hot falafels, drizzled with tahini and spicy sauces and nestled among just enough pickle-y veggies and salad-y things to feel downright good for us.So we set out to sample falafel spots across the East and South Bays, from Walnut Creek’s Manakish to Berkeley’s King of Kebab and Santa Clara’s Shawarmaji. Here are our favorites. (And if we missed your fave, let us know. You’ll find a contact form at the end of this story.)Manakish Oven & Grill, Walnut CreekYou could eat at this cute Walnut Creek restaurant almost every other day for a ...KRON4: New Network, New Newscasts, Live Sports

The U.S. Border Patrol has been detaining asylum-seekers outdoors in a deadly corner of the Arizona desert for the better part of a year — significantly longer than was previously known — according to photos, video, and interviews conducted by The Intercept. The practice was one of several described by concerned officials with U.S. Customs and Border Protection, the Border Patrol’s parent agency, who say that their agency is a flouting a federal court order mandating the humane treatment of migrants. In July, amid a lethal and record-setting heatwave, The Intercept captured photos of roughly 50 migrants caged in an outdoor pen at the Border Patrol’s Ajo Station, deep in the Sonoran Desert two hours west of Tucson. The high temperature that day was 114 degrees. According to CBP officials who are based in the state and have direct knowledge of the situation, the caging was no isolated incident: Supervisors at the remote station have been using the pen, as well as other exposed areas, s...Latest news
