By STEVE PEOPLES, ADRIANA GOMEZ and ANTHONY IZAGUIRRE (Associated Press)MIAMI (AP) — Florida Gov. Ron DeSantis entered the 2024 presidential race on Wednesday, stepping into a crowded Republican primary contest that will test both his national appeal as an outspoken cultural conservative and the GOP’s willingness to move on from former President Donald Trump. The 44-year-old Republican revealed his decision in a Federal Election Commission filing before an online conversation with Twitter CEO Elon Musk. It marks a new chapter in his extraordinary rise from little-known congressman to two-term governor to a leading figure in the nation’s bitter fights over race, gender, abortion and other divisive issues. DeSantis is considered to be Trump’s strongest Republican rival even as the governor faces questions about his far-right policies, his campaign-trail personality and his lack of relationships across the Republican ecosystem. Still, he has generated significant...Corey Kluber headed to bullpen in latest rotation shakeup

Corey Kluber was one of Boston’s highest-profile free agent additions this past offseason, a two-time Cy Young winner expected to provide a steady, veteran presence in a rotation littered with red flags. But less than two months after getting the ball on Opening Day, Kluber has officially lost his spot.Red Sox manager Alex Cora announced Wednesday during his weekly appearance on WEEI’s Gresh and Fauria Show that Kluber will be moved to the bullpen starting Friday and that Tanner Houck will start on Sunday in Arizona.“We were waiting for Tanner to see how he felt after his start and we’re going to make a change, Tanner is going to start on Sunday and Corey is going to the bullpen starting Friday,” Cora said. “We had that conversation with Corey, very professional, he understands, he signed here to be a starter but right now he’s struggling and obviously the kids are throwing the ball well. There’s a lot of off days coming up so we decide...Boston City Council passes new redistricting map [+photo, link]

A contentious redistricting process ended with relatively little fuss Wednesday, when the Boston City Council passed a new map via a 10-2 vote.A last-minute compromise over District 4 and 5 changes, the subject of a bitter exchange that saw councilors arguing for more than six hours on Tuesday, appeared to be a contributing factor to the final, lopsided vote.Three councilors who voiced dissent Tuesday over a Mattapan precinct that would have been moved from District 5 to District 4 voted in favor of the amended map that Councilor Ruthzee Louijeune brought before the body Wednesday — which undid the change she had initially proposed for that precinct, 14-14.Voting in opposition were Councilors Kendra Lara and Julia Mejia.“This was obviously a very contentious process,” Louijeune said. “Whenever legislators are drawing lines there’s a lot at stake for people individually. And you always have to remember to center what’s most important to the voters.”The City Council was ab...McCarthy sends Republican debt limit negotiators to White House, but sides are ‘far apart’

By LISA MASCARO, STEPHEN GROVES and SEUNG MIN KIM (Associated Press)WASHINGTON (AP) — House Speaker Kevin McCarthy said Wednesday he was sending Republican negotiators to the White House to finish out debt limit talks, but warned that the two sides are “still far apart” as they try to reach a budget deal with President Joe Biden.McCarthy said he remained optimistic they could make progress in hopes of an agreement before a deadline as soon as next week, when the Treasury Department could run out of cash to pay its bills. “We’re not going to default,” said McCarthy, R-Calif.Defiant, the speaker said “it’s not my fault” that Washington was careening toward a crisis, pushing blame onto the White House for Biden’s refusal to negotiate earlier as Republicans acted to slash spending.“I’m hoping we can make progress,” McCarthy said.Debt ceiling negotiations are locked on a classic problem that has vexed, divided ...Think a safari can’t be romantic? Florida Gov. Ron DeSantis has filed paperwork for his long-anticipated bid for the 2024 Republican presidential nomination, offering himself up to GOP voters as an uncompromisingly conservative, yet still electable, alternative to former President Trump as the party grapples with recent electoral disappointments.DeSantis, who filed with the Federal Election Commission on Wednesday, had been floated for years as a prospective presidential candidate, but his ambitions began to take on a more concrete form over the past several months. He already has the backing of a well-funded super PAC, Never Back Down, as well as a vast war chest that can be transferred to a federal entity, though not directly to a campaign. In launching a White House bid, the Florida governor is hoping to sell himself to Republican voters as a low-drama, winning substitute for Trump, a one-time political ally who has attacked DeSantis relentlessly in recent months over his presidential aspirations.
