By DOUG FERGUSON (AP Golf Writer)HOYLAKE, England (AP) — Brian Harman found himself in elite company through two rounds at Royal Liverpool, tying the 36-hole record also held by Tiger Woods and Rory McIlroy. Even better was having no company at all atop the leaderboard Friday in the British Open.Harman seized control early with four straight birdies, and saved his best for the final hole. He ripped a 5-iron to 15 feet for eagle, giving him a 6-under 65 that was good for a five-shot lead over Tommy Fleetwood going into the weekend. Not since Scottie Scheffler at the 2022 Masters has a player led a major by five shots through 36 holes. The last player to lead the British Open by five at the halfway point was Louis Oosthuizen at St. Andrews in 2010. Both went on to win handily.“I understand a lot can happen at an Open, but eight shots is a lot of shots to spot a player who’s playing really well,” said Jordan Spieth, who lost three shots on the back nine for a 71 ...Army veteran convicted of murdering elderly Garden Grove neighbor in attempted rape

BOSTON (AP) — The game between the Boston Red Sox and New York was suspended in the bottom of the fourth inning with the Mets leading 4-3 on Friday night. The Mets erased a three-run deficit on two-run homers by Brandon Nimmo and Daniel Vogelbach and had one out and a 1-2 count on Alex Verdugo at 8:20 p.m. when the umpires called for the tarp as the rain picked up at Fenway Park.About 90 minutes later, the National Weather Service issued a flash flood warning for the Boston area until 12:45 a.m. The rain had let up briefly but picked up with force again about 1 hour, 40 minutes into the delay.“Just when they’re saying there might be a window (when the rain would let up), we heard snap, crackle, pop,” Mets manager Buck Showalter said. Showalter decided that starter Kodai Senga wouldn’t return about 50 minutes into the delay.“We reached a point where Kodai was done. … We had plans if it restarted,” Showalter said. “We’ll see if it’s going to be the same way.”It was de...Bryce Harper makes impression at first, but Phillies fall to Guardians 6-5 to end AL streak

CLEVELAND (AP) — Bryce Harper enjoyed feeling the soft infield dirt under his cleats. The floor of the camera well wasn’t as welcomed.Harper made a stunning catch in foul territory in his first career start at first base, but the Cleveland Guardians ended Philadelphia’s interleague winning streak at 12 games by edging the Phillies 6-5 on Friday night. The Phillies moved Harper, a two-time MVP and normally an outfielder, to first base ahead of the trade deadline to see if he could handle the position. Harper wasted no time in showing he’s more than capable.“He looked pretty comfortable,” Phillies manager Rob Thomsen said. “He didn’t look out of place.”In the third inning, Harper ran into foul territory and snagged Amed Rosario’s foul pop before tumbling into an empty photographer’s pit — a moment Thomsen joked made his heart skip and likely drew gasps from Phillies fans everywhere.“I feel fine,” said Harper, who had a red welt on his lower back. “I t...Sophia Smith scores twice for US in in 3-0 victory over Vietnam to open the Women’s World Cup
