Austin 'very underserved' with shelter beds, City details plans to fix the problem

AUSTIN (KXAN) -- Austin has the lowest number of beds compared to people experiencing homelessness out of all other big cities in Texas - as well as, Philadelphia, Nashville and Seattle, according to the city's Homeless Strategy Division.The department presented these findings to the Downtown Austin Alliance (DAA) in the alliance's monthly safety forum Thursday morning. Los Angeles was the only city on the list with a lower ratio than Austin.According to that presentation, Austin has 39 beds per 100 people experiencing homelessness. MAXWELL, Texas (KXAN) -- June 20 marks one year since two Maxwell Community Volunteer Fire Department firefighters died in a crash while returning home from fighting a wildfire. Brothers Hunter Coco, 21, and Jonathon Coco, 25, were returning to Maxwell from fighting a wildfire outside of Lockhart when the crash occurred, according to a post on the Maxwell Community Volunteer Fire Department’s Facebook page. JOHNSBURG, N.Y. (NEWS10) - A new emergency vehicle arrived just in time in the town of Johnsburg earlier this year. The Johnsburg Emergency Squad is one of 14 EMS squads around Warren County to receive funding in recent months from the county's allotted wealth of American Rescue Plan Act (ARPA) funding.This year, Johnsburg EMS purchased a 2022 Mercedes Benz Sprinter Demers ambulance. More than half of the price on the new set of life-saving wheels came from $73,000 in ARPA funds, which the county has fully allocated in pieces over nearly two years.Other EMS squads around the county have been helped out, too. Bay Ridge Fire Department in Queensbury used $65,793 to purchase Jaws of Life equipment and other items, while Bay Ridge Rescue Squad used some of its own $46,568 to invest in new reflective safety jackets, as well as additional rescue training. ALBANY, N.Y. (NEWS10) -- The National Arena League has announced that the Albany Empire's league membership has been terminated. The decision was made after an emergency conference call of the NAL's board of owners discussing the Empire’s failure to pay overdue league mandated assessments. ST. LOUIS - New St. Louis Circuit Attorney Gabe Gore continues efforts to replenish the office with prosecutors.Since taking office on May 30, Gore has welcomed 10 attorneys into the fold. Four other prosecutors are working on loan from neighboring counties.In addition, two former assistant circuit attorneys have returned to the office. Mary Pat Carl is back as the city's chief homicide officer, and Steven Capizzi has returned as chief warrant officer.
