Besides the loss of Jobs, one might reasonably forecast higher, or much higher, gas prices, and perhaps even periods of no availability of gas.Bay Area residents might give this lawsuit and potential refinery shutdown a little more thought, and how it might affect their daily standard of living.Chris KnielOrindaCity councils shouldleave global issues beRe: “Politicians condemn video of Oakland City Council meeting on Ga...

Zaidi, SF Giants wait out Day 1 of Winter Meetings as Ohtani’s decision creates ‘traffic jam dynamic’ NASHVILLE, Tenn. — Day One of the MLB Winter Meetings concluded Monday with nary a peep of activity. The San Francisco Giants are expected to be major players here and, depending on how things go, deeper into the offseason. But when president of baseball operations Farhan Zaidi took a seat in the club’s sixth-floor suite he welcomed reporters to the “most awkward session of the year.”As in: There’s about to be a whole lot of questions I can’t answer.Prohibited from talking publicly about current free agents, Zaidi zigged and zagged around naming names — we can: Shohei Ohtani — while attempting to explain the lack of transactions that so far have defined this winter and the first day of baseball’s offseason gathering.“It almost feels like this year there’s more of an awareness of some of the bigger dominoes that may fall. My sense is that there’s more patience for things to play out,” Zaidi said. “In one sense there’s a little bit ...

Read more Letters to the Editor.Tiny homes help S.J.’sunhoused residentsRe: “Homeless will need more time in tiny homes” (Page A6, Nov. 28).I read a letter concerning the tiny homes San Jose builds for homeless neighbors. I’ve worked on quick-build interim housing in San Jose since the inception and on all subsequent iterations of the model, and it’s incredible to see the positive impact as we build safe alternatives to unmanaged encampments. To clarify: Six months is not a limit, it’s the average length of stay in quick-build communities before residents graduate to permanent housing. Only one of six interim housing communities restricts length of stay, and we’re working to fix that. The rest allow residents to stay for however long it takes to connect to permanent supportive housing, find work and an apartment on their own, or reconnect with relatives.Between interim housing, permanent housing, and prevention, we’ve ...

The Rams are on a win streak and QB Matthew Stafford is barely getting touched. These are related LOS ANGELES (AP) — Although most NFL teams are exponentially better when their starting quarterback is upright and healthy, it’s been particularly true for the Los Angeles Rams over the past three seasons.Matthew Stafford has been safe and comfortable in the pocket lately, and it’s no coincidence the Rams are on their longest winning streak since their Super Bowl triumph.Stafford has been sacked only once during the Rams’ three straight victories since their bye week. He has barely been touched at all in the past two weeks, with Arizona and Cleveland registering just five combined quarterback hits and no sacks.Meanwhile, the Rams (6-6) have jumped into an NFC playoff race that appeared to be out of their reach only a month ago, thanks to this stretch of exceptional protection and smart play-calling designed to keep their franchise quarterback doing what he does best.“It’s always a goal,” coach Sean McVay said Monday. “The guys have done a great job of executi...

Perry was “wide open.” The insinuation was that Ca...
