Stock market today: World stocks fall as concerns rise over Israel-Hamas war and high yields

Stock market today: World stocks fall as concerns rise over Israel-Hamas war and high yields HONG KONG (AP) — World shares slumped further on Monday as higher risks of broader conflict in the Middle East clouded market sentiment and higher bond yields pressured stocks. The yield on the 10-year Treasury was at 5% early Friday. Stocks have been struggling under the weight of the bond market since high yields make borrowing more expensive for everyone and slow the economy while dragging on prices for stocks and other investments. The yield on the 10-year Treasury briefly topped 5% late Thursday for the first time since 2007, according to Tradeweb. It recently has been catching up to the Federal Reserve’s main interest rate, which is already above 5.25% — its highest level since 2001.“Indeed, the trajectory of U.S. Treasurys is not merely a question; it is the only question for financial markets,” Stephen Innes of SPI Asset Management said in a commentary. “U.S. government bonds are the critical benchmark reference point against which virtually all other global assets are ultima...

Argentine minister Massa has a surprise lead over populist Milei. They head to presidential runoff

Argentine minister Massa has a surprise lead over populist Milei. They head to presidential runoff BUENOS AIRES, Argentina (AP) — Economy Minister Sergio Massa produced a big surprise by finishing first in the opening round of Argentina’s presidential election, reflecting voters’ wariness about handing the presidency to his chief rival, a right-wing populist who upended national politics and pledged to drastically diminish the state.Massa’s victory over Javier Milei, a chainsaw-wielding economist and freshman lawmaker, came despite the fact that on his watch inflation has surged into triple digits, eating away at purchasing power of salaries and boosting poverty. Still, he wasn’t punished in Sunday’s voting. With nearly all balots counted early Monday, Massa had 36.7% of the vote and Milei had 30%, meaning the two will go to a Nov. 19 runoff. Most pre-election polls, which have been notoriously unreliable, had given Milei a slight lead over Massa. Former Security Minister Patricia Bullrich, of the main center-right opposition coalition, got 23.8% to finish third in the fiel...

So far, this is the largest number of these birds recorded by scientists on the territory of the Park.
