NY woman gets life-saving heart transplant surgery in Boston

An upstate New York woman whose brother got a heart transplant in Boston three years ago also recent underwent the procedure to treat a familial heart issue called dilated cardiomyopathy, which claimed the life of her father.Erica Raspante recently received a heard transplant in Boston to treat the condition, which causes the heart muscle to thicken and weaken, decreasing its ability to pump blood.For the last 15 years, she’s been in management mode.When she went back for tests at Mass General Hospital in Boston, they told her she needed a new heart immediately.Dr. Greg Lewis, her cardiologist, and Dr. Dave D’Allesandro, her transplant surgeon, got her on the list and using a heart harvest through what’s called “donation after circulatory death” or DCD, saved her life.“The family that chose to donate… whoever’s child, sibling whoever it was… whoever’s heart I got. 15-year-old boy struck, seriously injured by vehicle in Middleboro

An investigation is underway after a 15-year-old boy was struck and seriously injured by a vehicle in Middleboro on Sunday night, officials said.Officers responding to a report of a person struck on East Grove Street in front of Hannaford’s around 7:30 p.m. found the teen injured and assisted in transporting him by medical helicopter to Hasbro Children’s Hospital in Providence for treatment, Police Chief Joseph Perkins and Fire Chief Owen Thompson said in a joint statement.The driver of the vehicle stopped at the scene and is cooperating with police.The incident remains under investigation.No additional information was immediately available.This is a developing news story; stay with 7NEWS on-air and online for the latest details.

First responders have rushed to Castle Island to help search for a missing child, state police report tonight.A dive team has also been called along with Boston police and fire, the State Police Air Wing and Boston EMS. The State Police Marine Unit is also on-scene.They are “searching Castle Island … and in the surrounding ocean,” MSP said.The missing child is said to be 4 years old, but that is unofficial at this point.UPDATE: The State Police are now saying the missing child is a 4-year-old boy from South Boston.Castle Island is a peninsula in South Boston that’s right on the Harbor. (AP) — A horse died Sunday after a race at Churchill Downs, making it the eighth fatality in recent weeks at the home of the Kentucky Derby.Rio Moon “suffered a catastrophic injury to his left foreleg a few strides after the wire,” according to notes in the Equibase chart for the sixth race.The 3-year-old colt ridden by Martin Garcia was euthanized, the chart said. Rio Moon was trained by Dale Romans and was winless in six career starts with earnings of $11,621.Two horses were euthanized after being injured in races on the Kentucky Derby undercard on May 6. The Gophers softball team’s road to the Women’s College World Series begins on Friday.Minnesota (37-17) is heading to Seattle for an NCAA Tournament regional. The Gophers earned the No. 4 seed in the regional tournament and will play McNeese (44-14) on Friday.
