2024 race won’t be like 2020. That’s good and bad for Biden

WASHINGTON (AP) — No honking geese are likely to interrupt his speeches this time.As President Joe Biden seeks a second term, he won’t have to depend on glitchy Zoom connections, or deliver remarks in largely vacant theaters with attendees in chairs ringed by circle markings on the floor to ensure enough social distancing. His advisors won’t scrutinize the 1918 flu outbreak for clues on pandemic-era voting. With the country increasingly back to normal, Biden can fly to crowded campaign events on Air Force One, make policy announcements from the Rose Garden and shape not only the presidential race but global affairs with his actions.Just as the 2024 campaign will be vastly different from the coronavirus-marred 2020 edition, Biden won’t be able to hold on to the White House by running in the same way he won it three years ago. Virtual events offered from a basement rec room he converted into a studio in his Delaware home and avoiding travel for months at a stretch wo...In a growing India, some struggle to prove they are Indians

MURKATA, India (AP) — Krishna Biswas is scared. Unable to prove his Indian citizenship, he is at risk of being sent to a detention center, far away from his modest hut built of bamboo wood that looks down on fields lush with corn.Biswas says he was born in India’s northeastern Assam state. So was his father, almost 65 years ago. But the government says that to prove he is an Indian, he should furnish documents that date back to 1971.For the 37-year-old vegetable seller, that means searching for a decades-old property deed or a birth certificate with an ancestor’s name on it.Biswas has none, and he is not alone. There are nearly 2 million people like him — over 5% of Assam’s population — staring at a future where they could be stripped of their citizenship if they are unable to prove they are Indian.Questions over who is an Indian have long lingered over Assam, which many believe is overrun with immigrants from neighboring Bangladesh. At a time when India is about to overtake C...Bud Light fumbles, but experts say inclusive ads will stay

Bud Light may have fumbled its attempt to broaden its customer base by partnering with a transgender influencer. But experts say inclusive marketing is simply good business — and it’s here to stay.“A few years from now, we will look back on this ‘controversy’ with the same embarrassment that we feel when we look back at ‘controversies’ from the past surrounding things like interracial couples in advertising,” said Sarah Reynolds, the chief marketing officer for the human resources platform HiBob, who identifies as queer. On April 1, transgender influencer Dylan Mulvaney posted a video of herself cracking open a Bud Light on her Instagram page. She showed off a can with her face on it that Bud Light sent her — one of many corporate freebies she gets and shares with her millions of followers. But unlike the dress from Rent the Runway or the trip to Denmark from skincare brand Ole Henriksen, the backlash to the beer can was fast and furious. Three days after Mulvaney’s post, Kid Rock pos...Timberwolves drop thriller in Game 5, fall 4-1 in series to top-seeded Denver

DENVER — It was only fitting that Minnesota’s season ended with a surprisingly strong effort that came just short. There were highs in Game 5 in Denver — and numerous signs of promise — but it ended in defeat. The short-handed Timberwolves went down swinging in their 112-109 loss Tuesday to fall 4-1 to the West’s top seed in the first-round series and end their season.Anthony Edwards had a shot to knot the game at the buzzer, but it clanked off the back iron to officially pull the curtains on the campaign.Edwards was again the catalyst for Minnesota for much of the night. The 21-year-old guard cemented his postseason dominance by carrying the offensive load time and time again. He tallied 16 points in the first half alone. He finished the game with 29, but he needed 32 to send the game to an extra session.Denver paid its respects to the ascending superstar in the second half, blitzing and doubling him nearly every time he touched the basketball.Karl-Anth...PHOTOS: Denver Nuggets close out Minnesota Timberwolves with Game 5 win

A slow, savage smile swept across Nikola Jokic’s face.Tired of getting scratched and clawed at the hands of the feisty Timberwolves, Jokic grinned at officials knowing his dramatic Game 5 triple-double was fostered amid the physicality of postseason basketball. Jokic bullied Minnesota’s frontcourt for five consecutive points with under a minute left to seize Tuesday’s contest and oust the Timberwolves into a long, cold offseason. The Nuggets’ 112-109 victory sealed the series, 4-1, and secured a second-round playoff series that could start as early as Saturday.Minnesota had one last long shot after Jokic missed a free throw with 3.4 seconds left. When Anthony Edwards’ 3-pointer to tie the game at the buzzer hit back-rim, thanks to a fantastic contest by Bruce Brown, red, yellow, and blue confetti poured from the ceiling at Ball Arena.Jokic finished with 28 points, 17 rebounds and 12 assists. His dominance was apparent despite an uncharacteristic 8-of-29 shooting night. He was ...Nuggets 3-pointers: Denver’s first-half defense shows there’s still work to be done heading into second round

A 33-year-old man who walked away from the Male Community Reentry Program in Los Angeles two weeks ago has turned himself in, authorities with the California Department of Corrections and Rehabilitation announced Tuesday. Jovany Ojeda had last been seen running from the reentry facility on the morning of April 11. Special agents from CDCR’s Office of Correctional Safety immediately notified local law enforcement and worked to locate and apprehend the 33-year-old inmate. “Ojeda was admitted from Los Angeles County on November 3, 2021, to serve six years for grand theft auto, second-degree robbery and possession of a firearm by a felon as a second striker,” a CDCR’s news release noted. Nearly two weeks after the inmate ran from the reentry facility, OCS agents, who were in contact with Ojeda, convinced him to turn himself in. At approximately 11:45 p.m. on April 24, the 33-year-old inmate met agents near the reentry facility and was taken into custody without fur...Sabol gets biggest hit of MLB career as SF Giants shock Cardinals
