When her nine month old daughter started acting differently, Folichia Mitchell knew something was wrong; she just didn’t know how wrong.“As the weekend went on, the vomiting and spitting up started to progress and it started to be every couple of times she would eat,” Mitchell remembered. She took her daughter, Kennedy, to the pediatrician and things quickly escalated from there. At the hospital, an ultrasound technician found a circular object lodged in Kennedy’s intestines.“The ultrasound tech asked, ‘Do you have any marbles at home?’ and I said, ‘No, my kids don’t play with marbles,” Mitchell said. While Mitchell’s home didn’t have marbles, she did buy water beads for her 8-year-old son just days before. The toy starts out as small as a sprinkle but expands in water to the size of a small marble. She said she kept the beads contained and out of reach of her younger children.“I was so shocked. I still am,” Mitchell said. “I often think...Friend of fallen Waltham officer teams up with local business to hold donation drive for family

One day after he was killed while working a detail on a local road, a friend of Waltham police officer Paul Tracey is teaming up with a local business to hold a donation drive to help the Tracey family this holiday season. Tracey and National Grid worker Roderick Jackson died Wednesday after they were struck near a National Grid worksite on Totten Pond Road. The alleged driver in the crash, 54-year-old Peter Simon, was subsequently arrested and charged. Within Waltham on Thursday, Tracey was being remembered as someone who “lifted a lot of hearts,” according to friend Jennifer Smallwood. Smallwood said she will remember Tracey’s constant presence at the rink as she coached his daughter in hockey. “He never missed his kids’ game,” she said. “He never missed a practice. There were times that he would show up to the rink in his police uniform and he was there rooting for his kids.”Now among those mourning Tracey, Smallwood has partnered with Pizzi Farm in Waltham to...Bruins lose Charlie McAvoy in lifeless 3-1 loss to Buffalo

Despite their gaudy record and spot atop the Atlantic Division, the Bruins are not a team that can show up to a game a half hour late and steal a win. They learned that lesson on Thursday night at the Garden, when the previously struggling Buffalo Sabres took it to the B’s for the first half of the game, protected their lead well and took home a well-deserved 3-1 victory. The Sabres, playing without top defenseman Rasmus Dahlin (lower body), scored a pair of goals in the second period, another in the third and that was good enough.Coach Jim Montgomery sensed a performance like this might be coming after Wednesday’s practice that he found lacking in pace and effort. It carried over.“We just didn’t have any energy or life to us. I’ve got to take responsibility for the lack of us having that. The preparation clearly wasn’t correct,” said Montgomery. “I expected us to get better every period. I think we went from awful to poor. We never real...Bakersfield Christmas Parade delayed after vehicle struck paradegoers

VANCOUVER — A British Columbia Supreme Court jury has retired to deliberate in the first-degree murder trial of Ibrahim Ali, more than eight months after he pleaded not guilty to killing a 13-year-old girl in a Metro Vancouver park in 2017.The judge’s instructions to the jury on Thursday had been delayed, after Ali’s lawyer Kevin McCullough told the court the defence team had received death threats over the case.In remarks that can only now be reported with the jury sequestered, McCullough on Tuesday read out a message that said his family faced “a violent and brutal death” before Christmas.McCullough was unable to attend court in person the next day because he was at home in Victoria due to the threats, forcing the instruction of the jury to be postponed until Thursday. Justice Lance Bernard told the jurors the Crown’s case is circumstantial, requiring them to infer as the only reasonable conclusion that Ali forced the girl off a path and into a wooded area ...Paul Lisnek on Hunter Biden, GOP debate, and more
